We were at the Melia Tropical a few years ago and did the Saona Island tour and though it was a day long trip it was worth every minute.....catamaran to the island where there was a barbque lunch and snorkelling and laying around (we explored the beautiful beaches) and then motor boat back with a stop at a sand bar to hunt for starfish....it was great! Highly recommend it.Login to reply to this comment.

We've been to Punta Cana many times and have done The Bavaro Runners and The Outback Safari tours. They are very similar and we enjoyed them both. The tours last most of the day (around 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. or so). Great way to see the Dominican Republic. They both have websites to check out if you want further info.Login to reply to this comment.

Thanks for the input. The amphibias tour with the catamaran sounds interesting. We love to snorkle and I bet this would be a great way to get to a nice snorkle spot. There's 6 of us going, so this sounds like it would have something for everyone.Login to reply to this comment.

We were at the Gran Bahia in Punta Cana a few years ago & took a couple of side trips. I am sorry I don't remember the tour titles as I gave up keeping trip journals. Both trips were booked at the hotel & with pick up included. One was a snorekl tour to the Bavaro area & it was very good. Another was a day trip which included riding on an amphibias vehicle which they called a salamander, then back on the bus to a quaint Italian village that overlooked the river & then a bus ride to be picked up by a catamaran that took us to an island where we had lunch on the beach & snorkelled while there. It was a good tour & the rum & beer did flow but it was fun watching even though we don't overdo these included indulgences! Meals & drinks were included. We were back early enough to clean up for dinner.Login to reply to this comment.

We were in Punta Cana for less than a week, so didn't take any excursions. We had read about Saona Island though, and thought that sounded nice. The shopping near the resort was just a quick diversion. YOu definitely wouldn't want to spend a whole lot of time there (IMO). We walked down that way two or three times, and it was fun, but sometimes difficult trying to get out of a shop!!!Login to reply to this comment.

The Saona Island tour is fun and beautiful. I have heard wonderful things about the Bavaro Runners Tour, we intend to take it on our next trip to Punta Cana. Both are full day excursions.Login to reply to this comment.

I know kern and Margaritalady walked into a nearby town for shopping. Here are some suggestions. Anyone have something to add?
